What? You haven’t read Miguel and María Gallardo’s María y Yo? You’ve gotta be kidding! The illustrations by themselves are fantastic but once you’ve read the story about his vacation at a tourist resort in the Canary Islands with his autistic 12 year-old daughter you’ll be wishing you could go with them next time to share in their complicity. You may recognize this illustrator’s style from the Herald Tribune, La Vangaurdia or The New Yorker, but here he’s a father, using what he can to help his little girl.

What do you do if you’ve studied law and worked in Project Management for Multi-nationals and as a consultant and can’t find the sort of linen that you’re looking for when you’re living abroad?

Sábanas Nuevas

¿Qué haces si has estudiado derecho y has trabajado en gestión de proyectos para multinacionales y como consultora y no encuentras el tipo de ropa de cama que buscas, viviendo en el extranjero?

Putting Everything in Ordning

Once upon a time (thirty years ago or a little more,) in a land far, far away (Stockholm) there was a little bookbinder who made beautiful hand-covered notebooks. These notebooks were undoubtedly the fairest in the land. So many suitors did they inspire that in 1982 the little bookbinder opened a shop just to showcase these notebooks and the photo albums and binders they had begun to make to keep the notebooks company through the long Swedish winters. And they caled it Ordning&Reda (All in order.)

Word of these wonders spread all over the land and to other lands and more stores were opened to proclaim the beauty (and functionality) of these products until there were over 50 stores in 15 countries. Then in Barcelona, Ordning met Carmen (Mamen to her friends). She’d studied law and worked in accounting but always knew that one day her prince would come in the form of a business all of her own.

She took the franchise over from the original owner about a year after it opened (she had been the Cinderella working there when the owner decided it wasn’t her cup of tea after all.) Although it took her a little while to get the hang of being the boss now her super staff and the service they give are proof that her days as an apprentice businesswoman are over and Mamen and her partner (who takes care of press and pr,) are looking for a new space – why shouldn’t they, they’ve increased sales every month since they opened. Now that’s something!

And that must be because no one can resist the charms of the hand-bound notebooks (their technique comes from their book-binding days, using separatas of 5 sheets and linen thread to make resistant and lovely to use,) hand-covered binders and albums, the gorgeous displays – the colors make it look like a candy shop for stationary addicts. And the cards with beautiful drawings that remind us of some other Nordic design masters. All of this, and the pencil cases, cell-phone holders and bags make you want to put your life in order for once and for all!

Poner Todo En Ordning

Había una vez (hace treinta años o un poco más,) en una tierra muy muy lejana (Estocolmo) un pequeño encuadernador que hacía hermosos cuadernos forrados a mano. Estos cuadernos eran sin duda los más hermosos de la tierra. Tantos pretendientes inspiraron que en 1982 el pequeño encuadernador abrió una tienda solo para lucir los cuadernos (y los álbumes de fotos y archivadores que había empezado a producir para hacerles compañía a los cuadernos durante los largos inviernos suecos.) Y lo llamó Ordning&Reda (Todo en orden.)

Noticias de estas maravillas viajaron por toda la tierra y a otras tierras, y se abrieron más tiendas para proclamar la belleza, y funcionalidad, de estos productos hasta que había más de 50 tiendas en 15 países. Entonces, en Barcelona Ordning conoció a Carmen (Mamen para sus amigas.) Ella había estudiado derecho y había trabajado en contabilidad y gestión pero sabía que algún día llegaría su príncipe en forma de su negocio propio.

Se hizo cargo de la franquicia más o menos un año después de que abriera (había sido la Cenicienta trabajando allí cuando la propietaria original decidió que no era lo que quería.) Aunque le costó un poco cogerle el tranquillo a lo de ser la jefa, ahora su súper equipo y el servicio que dan son la prueba que sus días como aprendiz de empresaria son cosa del pasado, y Mamen y su socia (que se encarga de la publicidad y las relaciones públicas) buscan local para abrir otra tienda. ¿Por qué no? Esta tienda ha aumentado ventas cada mes desde que se inauguró. ¡Ahí es nada!

Y la razón tiene que ser porque nadie puede resistir los encantos de los cuadernos hechos a mano (la técnicas provienen de los días del encuadernador, utilizando separatas de 5 hojas e hilo de lino para hacerlos resistentes y gustosos de utilizar,) los archivadores forrados a mano y álbumes de fotos, y los maravillosos displays –los colores hacen que parezca una tienda de golosinas para adictos a la papelería. Y las postales con dibujos que nos recuerdan a otros maestros nórdicos del diseño. Todo eso, con los estuches y bolsas, te da ganas de poner tu vida en orden de una vez!

Easter Eggs

It’s Good Friday so you’re out of luck if you were thinking of shopping in Barcelona today. But any child getting ready to celebrate Easter knows that chocolate eggs are in the works and here they’re dreaming of the soon-to-be-delivered mona, the Easter treat that got it’s start as a bread with hard boiled eggs on top (one for each year of the child’s age.)

The evolution from bread to chocolate still life featuring the latest cartoon characters and current football heroes isn’t quite clear but Cacao Sampaka, the innovative chocolate temple has put out a brochure about the making of chocolate eggs to replace the mega egg they used to make (and then invite people to break with hammers the day before Easter.) Master chocolatiers at Escribà get a lot of press around this time of year, but every bakery here has its own masterpiece. Makes for great window shopping!

Huevos de Pascua

Es Viernes Santo – mala suerte si querías ir de compras hoy en Barcelona. Pero cualquier niño pensando en celebrar la Pascua sabe que pronto llegan los huevos de chocolate y aquí sueñan con la entrega de la mona, el regalo de Pascua que empezó como un pan dulce decorado con huevos duros (uno por cada año del niño.)

No está tan clara la evolución del pan dulce a bodegón en chocolate con personajes de dibujos animados o los héroes futbolísticos del momento, pero este año Cacao Sampaka, el templo de la innovación en chocolate, ha publicado un folleto sobre cómo hacer huevos de chocolate, en vez del mega huevo que hacían en años anteriores (y que invitaban al público a romper con mazas el día antes de Pascua.) Los maestros chocolateros de Escribà salen mucho en la prensa estos días, pero cada pastelería tiene su obra maestra. ¡Perfecto para ir de escaparates!

Sin ir de compras en Barcelona

Palm Sunday

Even as the windows of bakeries all over the city fill with monas (the chocolate masterpieces children receive from their godfathers on Easter Monday,) Rambla de Catalunya lives its fifteen minutes of Easter fame from the Thursday through Saturday before Palm Sunday as it fills with stands selling palmas, palmones and the toys and candy that adorn them.

On Palm Sunday it’s the godmother’s job to make hang the palmas (intricately woven fresh palm fronds for girls) and palmones (tall plain fresh palm fronds for boys,) with ribbons, toys and candy – everything from lollipops and chocolate to sugar rosaries. If you’re shopping in Barcelona for Easter treats, don’t forget the miniature sized palmas and woven flowers. The pungent scent of fresh Palm means that Easter’s only a week away.

Domingo de Ramos

Mientras los escaparates de todas las pastelerías de la cuidad se llenan con monas (las obras maestras de chocolate que los niños reciben de sus padrinos el lunes de Pascua,) Rambla de Catalunya vive sus quince minutos de fama pascual del jueves al sábado antes de Domingo de Ramos, cuando está invadido por los puestos que venden palmas y palmones y los juguetes y caramelos que los adornan.

El Domingo de Ramos es responsabilidad de la madrina adornar las palmas y palmones con cintas, juguetes y caramelos –desde piruletas y chocolates hasta rosarios de azúcar. Si vas de compras en Barcelona para regalos de Pascua, no te olvides de las palmas en miniatura y las flores hechas de palma trenzada. El intenso olor a palma fresca anuncia que solo falta una semana para Pascua.
