A taste of home

Proust, madeleine, secret chambers of memory and emotion unlocked, yadda yadda yadda. Highbrow literary allusions aside, there’s no taste like home – your mother’s cakes, grandmother’s stews or just a plain old pb and j. Living abroad those are some of the things you never knew you’d miss so much.

Ricky Mandle and Mónica Navarro know all about how taste can transport you to another world – that’s why they started Delishop. He’s from New York, she’s from Barcelona and they both love food. Sabor a casa

Proust, madalenas, cámaras secretas de recuerdos y emociones abiertas, bla, bla bla. Eruditas referencias literarias aparte, no hay nada como el sabor de casa – los pasteles de tu madre, los guisos de tu abuela o sándwich de peanut butter and jelly normal y corriente. Viviendo en el extranjero, son algunas de las cosas que nunca imaginaste cómo las ibas a extrañar.

Qué chungo la crisis

Seamos sinceros. Todo el mundo, o bien por necesidad o bien por cautela, ha reducido presupuestos y re estructurado sus valores. Como debe ser, francamente. Pero eso no quita que todo el mundo necesita un poco de fabuloso en su vida.

Qué suerte entonces que 24fab viene a pasar dos días en Barcelona para dártelo. Ir a verlos en su showroom prestado y alquiler o comprar modelitos de la temporada (!!!!) - son cosas nunca vistas aquí. ¿No es suficiente fab para tí? También habrá un taller de Sara Vergara. Sí, esa Sara Vergara, la de los tocados.

House of Cards

Walking down Maestro Falla in sleepy Sarria, you'd never know that the little shop with old postcards and funny antique illustrations was the worldwide center of a brand new trend back in the day. In 1965 Salvador Tenn decided to stop working (as in the expression "work at what you love and you'll stop working,") and open a shop for coin and stamp collectors like himself. He fixed it up, baptized it Iris Mundus and ordered two boxes of marchbooks from the Fosforera Española and put one behind the counter to give out to customers and neighbors. And he filled it with his growing collection of coins and stamps, then postcards and playing cards. Then lottery tickets.

Yes! It turns out that there's more than one way to hit the jackpot with the lottery in Spain. Besides buying the winning number (so repetetive, so chancy!) you can collect tickets that weren't lucky the first time around. All because Salvador Tenn, trying to build stock, kept getting stuck with old lottery tickets when he'd cart off boxes of stuff from the little lottery sellers. What most people see as junk looks like a fascinating challenge to a collector's eye and he started contacting the Lottery Administration to find out more about the provenance of strange stamps and special issue tickets. And that's how old, non-winning lottery tickets became something to treasure in Spain.

While he collected, his wife Neus ran back and forth from house and three daughters to the shop. Not long ago two of the three daughters took the shop's operations over from their father. They swear the don't have shopkeeping in their blood, although one had a toy shop and the other still has a ceramic shop in Sant Feliu de Guixols. Still, growing up among all the bric-a-brac and stamps and coins and lottery tickets and playing cards and postcards may gave given them pack-rat tendancies since both Montse and Neus confess to giving a home to cast-offs found on the nit dels trastos. Some things never change.

Some things do though - as girls all three would help their father send his catalogs to collectors all over. Since 2005 they've been posting news to their website and shipping the goods to far-flung corners.

And last winter, just in time for the shop's 44th anniversary they found the second box of matchbooks they'd ordered in 1965. Still work too, so if you stop by for some vintage postcards you might be lucky enough to see Salvador out on his afternoon walk to check in on his little girls and give away a few matchbooks. Definitely worth the trip!

Paseando por Maestro Falla en Sarrià, no dirías nunca que la tienda con las postales e ilustraciones antiguas es el centro mundial de lo que en su día fue una tendencia nueva. En 1965 Salvador Tenn decición dejar de trabajar (en el sentido de "trabaja en lo que te gusta y dejarás de trabajar") y abrió una tienda para coleccionistas de monedas y sellos como él. Lo arregló, la bautizó Iris Mundus y pidió dos cajas de libritos de cerillas de la Fosferera Española y puso una en el mostrador para repartir entre clientes y vecinos. Y llenó la tienda con su colección de monedas y sellos y más adelante también con postales y naipes. Y después, lotería.

¡Sí! Resulta que hay más de una manera de ganar la lotería en España. Además de comprar el número ganador (qué repetetivo, qué riesgo tan alto de que no te toque!) puedes coleccionar lotería que no tuvo suerte en la primera ronda. Y todo porque Salvador Tenn, intentando encontrar stocks para la tienda, se llevó una y otra vez los stocks de los puestos de lotería que incluían lotería no vendida. Lo que a la mayoría parece un trasto es un reto fascinante para un coleccionista, así que empezó a ponerse en contacto con la Administración de Lotería para investigar los orígenes de los sellos raros y las ediciones especiales. Y es así que la lotería vieja que no había sido premiada se convertió en algo especial en España.

Mientras él coleccionaba, su mujer Neus iba arriba y abajo entre su piso y sus tres niñas y la tienda. Hace poco dos de las tres empezaron a gestionar la tienda. Juran no ser tenderas de vocación, aunque una tenía una tienda de juguetes didácticos y la otra una tienda de cerámica en Sant Feliu de Guixols. Ahora bien, criarse entre tantos objetos curiosos, sellos y monedas y lotería y naipes y postales debe haberles dado una tendencía a acumular, porque tanto Montse como Neus confiesan su aficción a dar un hogar a muebles encontrados en la nit dels trastos. Hay cosas que no cambian.

Y las hay que sí. De niñas, las tres ayudaban a su padre a enviar sus catálogos a todas partes. Desde 2005 suben las novedades a su web y envían pedidos por todo el mundo.

Y el invierno pasado, a tiempo para celebrar el 44 aniversario de la tienda, encontraron la segunda caja de libritos de cerrillas que habían pedido en 1965. Y todavía funcionan, o sea que si pasas a buscar unas postales vintage, puede que tengas la suerte de ver a Salvador cuando viene durante su paseo de la tarde a ver a sus niñas y regalar algunas cerrillas. ¡Vale la pena!

Can't Judge a Book by its Cover

If you're like us, "in the garlic," does not sound like a place you want to be. Thank goodness Valerie Collins and Theresa O'Shea wrote their book to keep you in the loop - or in the garlic as you'll find when you read it.

Both authors are British transplants to Spanish soil who, in their combined 50+ years in Spain, have had to learn the hard way that "bikbaporoob" is the local pronunciation of a common cold remedy from the Vick company and can enlighten us with priceles sultural tidbits like the true origins of foosball (just a teaser - they involve the Spanish Civil War, a kidnapping an a plane hijacking.)

This hilarious vocabulary checklist is great for anyone visiting or living in Spain or who is simply curious about this culture and its 13 (yes that's right, a fact we didn't know until we read In the Garlic,) living languages. Valerie and Theresa were tired of stereotypical or just plain factually inaccurate descriptions of the country so decided the time had come to put their hard-won knowledge and experience to work describing the culture from an insider/outsider's perspective.

Nada es lo que parece

Si no has crecido en España, "en el ajo" no suena a sitio donde apetezca estar. Por otra parte, si ya estás en el ajo, ¿pa' que leer un libro de dos inglesas que necesitan un diccionario para entenderte cuando pides Vicks Vapor Rub?

Pues porque ellas, que entre las dos llevan más de 50 años en España, te pueden enseñar mucho sobre tu país y los 13 idiomas vivos que se hablan aquí (sí, incluso muchos españoles no saben que son tantos). Y también datos importantes como los verdaderos orígenes del futbolín (una pista - tienen que ver con la Guerra Civil, un rehén y un secuestro de avión.)

Valerie y Theresa se hartaron de ver los estreotipos y la información errónea sobre España y decidieron que había llegado el momento de utilizar toda la información y experiencia que habían acumulado en estos años para describir la cultura desde el punto de vista de alguien que está al mismo tiempo de dentro y de fuera.

When you're least expecting it

You know that saying about how when you're least expecting something you should expect it? It is sooooooo true. Like today for example if you're standing on a street corner waiting for the light to change and thinking about where to duck for shelter if any more of the drops you'd just felt started falling on you and you absentmindedly walked into Petit Bateau and saw the cutest underwear you'd seen in a long time. You probably would not have been expecting that. But there it was.

We really don't have time to get into why it took so long for the bikini cut to catch on in the European market but let's just say that we know women who never buy their underwear in Spain so finding these was a major revelation.

You may not have been expecting to buy underwear today, but do it anyway - the Petit Bateau Super Fin Coton collection culotte is too good to pass up (and check out the matching tank tops because we were not expecting to love the set, but here we are, loving it.)

Cuando menos te lo esperas

¿Sabes aquel dicho de cuando menos te lo esperas lo debes esperar? Es taaaaaaaaan cierto. Como hoy por ejemplo si hubieras estado en una esquina esperando que se cambiara el semáforo para poder cruzar y pensando dónde refugiarte si te empiezan a caer más de estas gotitas que acabas de notar y hubieras entrado despistadamente en Petit Bateau y encontrado la ropa interior más mona que has visto en mucho tiempo. No te lo esperabas. Pero allí estaba.

No tenemos tiempo para indagar en el porqué el corte culotte ha tardado tanto en llegar al mercado europeo, pero digamos que conocemos mujeres que nunca se compran la ropa interior en España - el de hoy ha sido un gran hallazgo.

Igual no te esperabas comprar ropa interior hoy, pero hazlo de todas formas - el culotte de la colección Super Fin Coton de Petit Bateau no se puede dejar escapar (y fíjate también en las camisetas de tirantes - no esperabamos que nos fuera a encantar el conjunto, pero aquí estamos, encantadas.)

Cotton Kids

Here in Spain people say that a baby comes with a loaf of bread under its arm. According to her parents, Rita came with a shop under her arm. More or less. Mommy and Daddy worked in fashion, photography, fun stuff, but when Rita came along they started thinking about a project that would be a reflection of who they are and could grow with their family – and that’s when Cotton Kids was born.

An afternoon, after school stroll led them to the beautiful, light filled store on Jaume Piquet that was for rent and they put up the wallpaper and got started. The store is full of both basic and kooky t-shirts, lots of stripes on t-shirts and leggings, great jeans from Imps&Elfs (sorry H&M, but you’ve got to copy from someone), sophisticated sweatshirts that Mommy and baby can agree on (we know from personal experience) and Snook’s new version of plimsoles. The whole place couldn’t be more fun for everyone.

Cristina and Ramón search the globe (mostly by going to the trade shows in Copenhagen and Amsterdam) for special brands to stock – new for spring are Munsterkids and Babycase and you’ll see more Tuss and Popupshop than before. Make sure to stop by the shop on a seemingly sleepy Sarrià street – inside is all sunshine and light.

Aquí se dice que los bebés traen un pan debajo del brazo. Según sus padres, Rita traía una tienda debajo del brazo. Más o menos. Mamá y Papá trabajaban en moda, fotografía, cosas chulas, pero cuando llegó Rita empezaron a plantearse un proyecto que podría ser un reflejo de ellos y crecer con la familia – y nació Cotton Kids.

Un paseo post-cole una tarde los llevó al local de Jaume Piquet, que estaba lleno de luz y en alquiler – empapelaron la pared y se pusieron en marcha. La tienda está llena de camisetas básicas y también divertidas, muchas rayas en mallas y camisetas, tejanos fantásticos de Imps&Elfs (lo sentimos H&M, pero de alguien se ha de copiar,) sudaderas sofisticadas de las que les gustan a Mamá y a bebé (lo sabemos por experiencia,) y la nueva versión de plimsoles de Snook. No podría ser más divertido para todos.

Cristina y Ramón buscan por todo el mundo (principalmente a través de las ferias de Copenhague y Ámsterdam) para conseguir las marcas especiales que tienen – nuevas para esta primavera son Munsterkids y Babycase, y verás más Tuss y Popupshop que antes. No te pierdas esta tienda en una callecita de Sarriá – dentro es todo luz y alegría.

Sunday is for ...

It’s really not that easy to write about shopping these days. Nothing looks exciting enough to buy. We already have three of those at home. It’s unseasonably cold and windy. And all that consumer confidence data is telling us we’re not alone in feeling ho hum about anything that involves out of pocket expenses. So when you find out we’re writing about Maremagnum you think we’re going to tell you to go shop there. You are so wrong.

Because really we see two options if you feel more like lining your pockets than shelling out. Stay at home and read about everybody else’s batty anti-recession spending and feel secretly superior. Or win Maremagnum’s Un Domingo Diferente video contest (and the 1500 euros that goes along with the fame and glory.) Maremagnum? Because, no, it doesn’t have to about shopping, doesn’t have to include Maremagnum, doesn’t even have to be made in Barcelona. It just has to be less than two minutes about how you like to spend your Sunday without including any sexually explicit content (we’re not including that to be smart aleck-y, it’s right there plain as day in the contest rules.)

Read the rules, shoot your thing and get it all done before December 17. Easy as pie.

Domingo es para ...

No es nada fácil escribir sobre compras en estos días. Nada apetece tanto como para comprarlo. Ya tenemos tres iguales en casa. Hace más frío y viento de lo normal. Y todos los datos sobre la confianza del consumidor nos dicen que no somos los únicos a quienes se les han quitado las ganas de comprar. Así que cuando te enteras de que escribimos sobre Maremagnum, crees que te vamos a mandar allí de compras. Pues te equivocas.

Porque nos parece que hay dos opciones si tienes más ganas de llenar tus bolsillos que de desembolsar. Quedarte en casa leyendo sobre las delirantes estrategias anti-crisis de los demás. O ganar el concurso de vídeo “Un Domingo Diferente” de Maremagnum (y los 1500 euros que acompañan la fama.) ¿Maremagnum? Sí, porque no tiene que ser sobre compras, ni tiene que hacer referencia a Maremagnum, ni siquiera tiene que estar hecho en Barcelona.
